It is probably a shame that Walt Disney re-imaged Father Christmas. It is certainly the reason why the re-package version is only appealing to young children. Saint Nicholas is not remembered historically as an old white skinned portly man. He was, I believe, one of the youngest bishops, got into a fight about policy at synod and was otherwise proactive. However, he never had to climb down chimneys because there weren’t any or reindeer because there was no snow. Saint Nicholas is quite well documented and is his bones visible whereas Father Christmas is either fantasy or pagan in origin. The real Father Christmas in the person of Saint Nicholas, would have been a far more appealing role model to older children.
